GH Dirty Clothes Room

This room was used to store linens, dirty laundry, and laundry supplies.  There is no source of water or heat here, so it was not a place to do the laundry per se.  The washing would have been done in the kitchen or cistern area and the ironing in the kitchen near the range, where the irons were heated.  Commercial laundries were also available.

Curtains, rag rugs, and out-of-season linens were also stored in this closet. Tobacco, camphor, lavender, and vetivert (i.e., a grass with fragrant roots) were used to protect linens from humidity, moths and other insects and to keep the fabrics smelling fresh.
