Join Dr. Michael Shane Powers with an in-person conversation on the Gilded Age of New Orleans and its numerous connections to Latin America!

About this Event:

Come sip wine and learn a bit with ! New Orleans has long been a city defined by its diversity and ties to the wider world. This was especially true in the decades following the Civil War. During the Gilded Age, the Crescent City hosted a major world's fair and increased its international trade all while working class and non-white New Orleanians played a large role in the city's evolving political and cultural fabric. Dr. Powers' talk will pay particular attention to Latin America as a means to explore how the late 19th century shaped the New Orleans of today.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Powers earned his B.A. from the University of Florida in 2010, Masters at Clemson University in 2012, and PhD from the University of Arkansas in 2018.

Dr. Powers is an Associate Professor of History at Angelo State University in West Texas, where he has taught since 2019. From Antebellum America to The Gilded Age and Progressive Era, his classes focus on the 19th century U.S. South and its reciprocal links to global affairs, especially Latin America. Dr. Powers has received numerous fellowships, including from Tulane and the Smithsonian, and has published a chapter in an edited collection from LSU Press as well as an article in the Louisiana History journal.
